Building Confidence – One Step at a Time
Mom didn’t think she could make it to the top of Snow King Mountain.
Across the street from me, in the small town of Jackson, Wyoming, loomed what the locals called steep and cheap. With a handful of ski trails and a vertical rise of only 1,571 feet, it looked like an easy summertime hike - but it wasn’t. With a skeptical look in her eyes, halfway up the mountain, Mom asked if we were going to make it. I assured her that it wasn’t a race, and if we slowed our pace, took some breaks, and kept putting one foot in front of the other, we’d be there before we knew it. When we reached the summit, Mom stood in awe as she took in the spectacular views of the Teton and Gros Ventre Mountain Ranges and the Jackson Hole Valley floor below.
Confidence doesn’t always arrive with a bold entrance. Sometimes, it builds quietly, step by step, as we consistently move forward with quiet determination to reach our goals. Confidence grows when we choose to try, even when we are not sure we can make it. Every time we act despite self-doubt, we reinforce the belief that we are capable. Confidence isn’t about having all the answers but about trusting that we can figure it out along the way.
The key to personal growth isn’t waiting for the perfect moment; it starts where you are now, with a willingness to grow and a plan for moving forward. Big goals can feel overwhelming when viewed all at once, but momentum builds through small, consistent actions. Whether you are working toward a stronger sense of personal identity and self-worth, improving your physical health, or striving to achieve a professional dream, progress comes from showing up - not perfectly, with all the answers, but persistently, with your vision and values in mind. Focused action creates clarity, and over time, those consistent steps forward add up to a life you may once only have dreamed of.
By slowing her pace and taking breaks along the way to rest and soak in the views, Mom was able to focus on each step and find her hiking rhythm. As we neared the summit, her doubt became certainty that she would conquer the physical demands of the climb. The process became the journey, and the amazing views from the summit were the reward!
In September, my mother will be eighty-eight. She has lived a rich and adventurous life. Although she raised her son and daughter in New York City, she generously shared her love of nature and adventurous spirit in ways that gave us opportunities to explore the world and pursue our own passions. As Mom’s memories fade with time, my own memories of her strength, perseverance, and growth through life’s challenges - one step at a time - become more meaningful, poignant, and inspiring.
